Volaris Begins Service to the San Francisco Bay Area with Flights from OAK to Mexico
Third daily flight to Tijuana announced at today's inaugural flight
Volaris Airlines, headquartered in Santa Fe, Mexico D.F., today announced plans to begin low-cost, nonstop flights between Oakland International Airport (OAK) and Tijuana, Mexico, beginning Aug. 28. The announcement was made at a press conference to launch Volaris' new service between OAK and both Toluca and Guadalajara, Mexico.
Volaris' Tijuana flight will depart OAK at 9:30 p.m. and arrives at 11:00 p.m., allowing for convenient connections to Acapulco, Morelia, Los Cabos, Guadalajara, Uruapan, Oaxaca and Culiacan. The return flight to OAK departs Tijuana at 11:45 a.m., arriving OAK at 1:25 p.m.
"What is unique about Volaris' flight to Tijuana is that it is not only the Bay Area?s first nonstop flight to one of Mexico's fastest growing cities, but it is also a convenient point for travelers to make quick and easy connections to other Mexican destinations," said Deborah Ale Flint, assistant director of aviation for the Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK. "Previously, passengers have connected in large U.S. hubs, often times changing terminals in the process. Now, they can have certainty of an easy walk down the concourse, and a smooth connection for themselves and their bags in Tijuana," she added.
Traveling between Oakland International Airport and Mexico is now convenient and affordable with Volaris' new flights to Toluca International Airport (31 miles west of Mexico City) and Guadalajara, which began today. With the addition of service to Tijuana in August, these three flights represent the beginning of an important investment in the Bay Area region as Volaris is deploying new Airbus aircraft, expected to have an economic impact of $30 million at OAK over the next two years.
Volaris and Southwest Airlines have announced their intention to enter a codeshare agreement beginning in spring 2010. The airlines are creating a business partnership that will enable their customers to travel between a variety of destinations in both the U.S. and Mexico. Travelers can look forward to convenient connecting flights on both Volaris and Southwest, as well as purchase tickets on each others websites.
