Airport Invites Community to Discuss Major Renovation Project

Oakland, CA: (February 15, 2017) – The Port of Oakland is planning to construct the Runway 12‑30 Rehabilitation Project at Oakland International Airport during the summer of 2017 and has scheduled a public outreach meeting to provide information and seek feedback on the project.

The meeting will be held:

Date:    Thursday, February 16, 2017

Time:   6:30 PM to 8:00 PM

Place:   Metropolitan Golf Links, 10051 Doolittle Drive, Oakland, CA  94603

The Runway 12-30 Rehabilitation project includes an asphalt concrete overlay and upgrades to the existing lighting infrastructure for the main air carrier runway at Oakland International Airport (OAK). This runway previously received a pavement overlay in 2001 that was designed for a 15-year service life.  The runway is currently due for a new overlay to provide a safe operating surface for aircraft and to maintain aviation safety standards.

Runway 12-30 is typically in service 24 hours per day.  To minimize impacts to air carrier operations, staff has conducted a planning process with airlines, air carriers, the FAA, and other stakeholders to develop a preferred short-duration, full-closure option that utilizes a parallel taxiway as a temporary South Field runway to construct the runway rehabilitation project. This is consistent with the construction approach used successfully in 2001.  Details of the project construction and phasing; and impacts on aircraft operations during construction will be presented.

For questions about the meeting or project, please contact Mr. Hugh Johnson at 510/627-1449 orhjohnson@portoakland.com.

Port staff are also available to meet with community groups during other regularly scheduled meetings.  To request Port staff attendance at such a meeting, or for special assistance to attend the meeting, please contact Carletta Starks at 510/627-1554 or cstarks@portoakland.com.
