-- Aviation Charter School Offers Its Students the Opportunity to Dream High and to Celebrate Their Year-End Accomplishments --

Oakland Aviation High School (OAHS) will hold its first-ever prom for the entire student body at Oakland International Airport's (OAK) Tower Lounge on Friday, June 5, 2009. The aviation charter school, located on OAK's North Field, is celebrating the end of its third year of education.

Oakland Aviation High School's students, faculty and parents will come together at OAK's eighth-floor Tower Lounge between 7:00 p.m. through 11:00 p.m. tonight. They will be celebrating OAHS's third year in operation, and the students transition to the next grade level.

"Prom is an important coming-of-age event for our students. It is their reward for hard work and tenacity throughout the school year, and allows our small, but mighty, student body to connect socially," said Dr. James Sulton, principal of Oakland Aviation High School. He added, "Offering prom for the first time is a significant milestone for our school."

Oakland Aviation High School, a college-preparatory charter school located on OAK's North Field, will complete its third year of operation in June. A total of 110 ninth-, tenth- and eleventh-grade students are currently enrolled. The school connects students who have an interest in aviation to post-secondary education. The curriculum prepares students for successful entry-level careers in the aviation industry. Oakland Aviation High School's focus is to develop and prepare students to be highly successful learners, educators, aviators and business professionals.

"The Port of Oakland was a founding partner of Oakland Aviation High School, and our staff has supported its leadership since it opened in 2006," said Steve Grossman, director of aviation for the Port, which owns and operates OAK. "The school is an important part of our aviation community. We're pleased they chose to celebrate prom in the airport's popular eighth-floor Tower Lounge, where students can both dance under and view the stars through our 360-degree window view," he added.
