OAK Ranks Highest for On-Time Arrivals Among U.S. Airports in January 2009

-- Hawaiian and Southwest are among the top three airlines for on-time arrivals --

Oakland International Airport (OAK) had the best U.S. airport on-time arrival record in January, according to FlightStats, an organization that tracks and compiles data about the airline industry. Hawaiian and Southwest, both of which serve OAK, were among the top three U.S. airlines arriving on time.

Oakland International was the top performing airport in January 2009, with 87.72 percent of flights arriving on time. There are a number of reasons for this success:

- The consistently good weather in the East Bay;
- OAK's main air carrier runway is being used at only 60 percent of its overall capacity, allowing air traffic control a lot of separation time in between arriving and departing flights; and
- Airline, airport, FAA and other staff work together closely to ensure a safe, secure and on-time operation for the more than 11 million passengers who travel through OAK each year.

"Oakland is used to being named the best airport in the San Francisco Bay Area for on-time performance, and now we take particular pride in being ranked number one for on-time arrivals among all U.S. airports," said John Albrecht, aviation marketing manager for the Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK.

FlightStats's data also shows that Hawaiian Airlines ranked No. 1, with 90.47 percent of flights arriving on time, and Southwest Airlines ranked No. 3, with 83.37 percent of flights arriving on time, in January.

Hawaiian offers a daily nonstop flight between OAK and Honolulu, Hawaii, on Boeing 767 twin-aisle, wide-body jets. Southwest, which served 69 percent of OAK's 11.5 million passengers in 2008, offers 120 daily nonstop flights to 19 cities from OAK. Southwest will add more nonstops to Albuquerque, Nashville and Kansas City in May.

FlightStats examined data for 40 major airports in the United States, Canada and Mexico. On-time means flights arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. Visit www.flightstats.com for more information.
