OAK is Major Gateway to Hawaii with Nonstop Flights to Four Islands
Alaska Airlines announced service to Lihue, on the island of Kauai, from Oakland International Airport (OAK) beginning March 28, 2011, making it the fourth nonstop Hawaiian Island destination from OAK. This new service complements Alaska Airlines existing service to Kahului, Maui, and Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii, from OAK. Hawaiian Airlines flies daily nonstop service from OAK to Honolulu, on the island of Oahu.
"Oakland International Airport now has a full portfolio of Hawaiian service for consumers to choose from and has become a major gateway to Hawaii from the mainland,” said Deborah Ale Flint, Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK. “Alaska Airlines’ decision to serve Lihue is based upon the success of existing Hawaiian Island service, and we’re extremely pleased to see additional growth in these markets. What is especially appealing about this new flight is that it is an evening departure. Nothing can beat finishing a day in the Bay Area, then hopping on Alaska Airlines’ flight to beautiful Kauai and arriving in time for dinner,” she continued.
Alaska will operate four weekly flights between OAK and Lihue Airport (LIH) on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Flight times are as follows:
Flights begin Monday, March 28, 2011, from Terminal 1. All flight times are local.
Alaska’s additional service between OAK and the Hawaiian Islands includes:
- Four weekly flights to Kahului Airport (OGG), on the island of Maui, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
- Three weekly flights to Kona International Airport (KOA), on the west side of Hawaii’s Big Island, on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Alaska will use new, high-tech Boeing 737-800 jet aircraft which seat 16 first class and 141 main cabin passengers. Flights to Lihue are now on sale at www.alaskaair.com or by calling 1-800-ALASKAAIR (1-800-252-7522). Fares start at $179 each way for tickets purchased by July 9, 2010, and travel through May 17, 2011. These new flights are in addition to Alaska’s current schedule of flights between OAK and Seattle, and sister company Horizon Air’s service between OAK and Portland. Together, the two airlines are the second busiest carrier at OAK.
