OAKLAND, Calif. – Nov. 29, 2001 - Just when Bay Area travelers may need it most, Oakland International Airport has launched a fresh new Web site.
Travelers by the thousands are flocking to the airport for holiday travel. They can use the new airport Web site, located at www.OaklandAirport.com to: · Check the current status of a flight. · Find out whether parking is still available in airport lots. · Check a map of the terminal, or the parking lot, or the best route to the airport before they ever leave home. · Find out whether the freeways are clear or BART is running on time.
Travelers flying into Oakland can: · Find flights into Oakland to help them make this very easy connection to points throughout the entire Bay Area, including San Francisco. · Check for convenient connections to taxis, shuttles, buses, trains and ferries. · Find out the current weather conditions in Oakland. · Browse a long list of attractions that help make Oakland such a great destination.
Oakland residents can use the site to: · Check the latest on plans for a new terminal, including pictures. · Subscribe to a newsletter to keep up with the latest changes. · Learn about a job at the airport, or with one of its many partners. · Volunteer to help airport visitors.
Businesses can use the site to: · Take advantage of Oakland’s significant air cargo advantages. · Participate as a contractor as the airport’s $1.5 billion expansion program moves forward. · Arrange business travel on one of 11 commercial airlines, a chartered jet or a private plane.
The site was designed primarily with airline passengers in mind, said Christopher Minner, Air Service Coordinator at Oakland International Airport. “We want people who plan to fly into or out of Oakland to be able to find the information they want right on the home page, or at most, one click away,” Minner said. “We think we’ve succeeded. Even for more detailed information, nothing anywhere on the site is more than three or four clicks deep.”
The site was launched on Nov. 21, the day before Thanksgiving. The airport Web site serves an average of about 1,800 visitors a day - with more than 27,000 hits. Because of the heavy holiday travel, the site had more than 3,000 visitors on Monday, Nov. 19, before the site was launched.
The site was created by e-agency, an Oakland Web shop that promotes its range of services, from Web design to programming, hosting and marketing, as “everything Internet.” Minner has worked on a number of both Web and print projects with e-agency and it’s parent marketing communications company, MCAnet, over the last two years. “E-agency has made this project an enormous pleasure for me,” Minner said. “They know their business. This is a team of real professionals.”
MCAnet made Oakland International only the seventh airport in the world to have Web site when it built original site in 1995. The site had evolved many times since then, but this was its first complete makeover. “Much has changed since then - at the airport, in Oakland, on the Internet and in the world,” noted Dave Dunn, president of MCAnet. “It was time this site changed, too. We’re very proud to have been part of it – again.” Oakland International Airport served more than 10.6 million passengers and handled more than 700,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2000. Oakland has nearly 200 flights a day on 11 domestic and international carriers to 33 nonstop destinations, including the Hawaiian Islands, the New York area, Atlanta and Mexico. The airport is a revenue division of the Port of Oakland, an independent department of the city of Oakland. Oakland International consistently has the best on-time record in the Bay Area, according to statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is the only Bay Area airport with a dedicated shuttle bus that meets every Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system train at the nearby Coliseum station. On-airport parking rates are $18/day in the long-term (Daily) lot and $15/day in the economy/overflow lots.
