New and Improved Roadway Opens at OAK

Oakland, CA, February 6, 2004 – Weather permitting, the newly constructed traffic lanes on San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport’s (OAK) main roadway, Airport Drive, will be permanently opened to airport users at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7. Traffic entering the airport from 98th Avenue or Hegenberger Road will merge onto the new section of roadway. Traffic exiting the terminal area will also be rerouted onto the new traffic lanes.

Three traffic lanes will be available in each direction on Airport Drive offering six lanes of traffic relief and easing traffic congestion, especially during peak travel times. Weather permitting, within four weeks, the cross-airport roadway project will open providing residents and businesses of Bay Farm Island in the city of Alameda improved access to OAK and Interstate 880.

Also, as of 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, traffic entering the on-airport Economy parking lot will be permanently rerouted to a new section of roadway. From the newly constructed Airport Drive traffic lanes, signage will clearly direct motorists to the Economy lot entrance. The roadway exiting the Economy lot is unchanged.

Airport Drive improvements are part of a $114 million airport roadway project that began in June 1999. The project included widening of 98th Avenue and construction of the Doolittle Drive and Airport Drive interchange, completed in fall 2002. Funding comes from the cities of Alameda and Oakland, the Port of Oakland, the Federal Highway Administration and Measure B funds from the Alameda County Transportation Authority.

OAK is owned and operated by the Port of Oakland, an independent department of the City of Oakland. OAK is moving forward with its Airport Development Program (ADP), a group of expansion and improvement projects. In addition to airport roadway improvements, the ADP consists of a Terminal Expansion Program that includes construction of expanded terminal facilities, a multi-level parking facility and support facilities. The new facilities are designed to comfortably accommodate OAK’s future passenger and cargo demand. Ground breaking on these projects is expected in spring 2004.
