OAKLAND, Calif. -- San Francisco Bay Area travelers have more nonstop options when flying to Mexico from Oakland International Airport (OAK). In November 2009, Mexicana Airlines and Volaris Airlines expanded service to Mexico from OAK, making it the fastest growing Bay Area airport for international flights.
Mexicana Airlines, Mexico's largest carrier, resumed two weekly flights to Leon on Nov. 10. Leon, in the heart of Guanajuato and near the popular tourist destination of San Miguel de Allende, is the fifth largest city in Mexico. Mexicana also offers a daily flight to Guadalajara and two weekly flights to historic Zacatecas from OAK. Mexicana is an affiliate member of the One World alliance and began serving Oakland in 1998. The airline offers a seamless transfer of passengers and bags to the Volaris Shuttle between Toluca and its terminal located in Santa Fe/DF, offering great access to Mexico City. Low-cost Volaris, OAK's newest carrier, began service in July 2009 with two daily flights. With the addition of Tijuana service in September, and expanded Guadalajara service, Volaris has doubled its flights to four daily. Visit volaris.com.mx to book tickets and for more information.

Year-over-year there has been a 329 percent increase in flights and a 409 percent increase in seats to Mexico. With more flights to Mexico, OAK is becoming a recognizable gateway to Mexico for residents and visitors alike.
"International travelers appreciate the straightforward, easy-to-use facilities at Oakland International Airport. Combined with our consistent ranking as North America's No. 1 airport for on-time arrivals, Oakland continues to be the smart choice," said Deborah Ale Flint, Acting Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK. "Now, with more choices to Mexico from Oakland, Bay Area travelers have the added benefit of more destinations and competitive pricing," she added.
Volaris and Southwest Airlines have recently announced a new relationship. The airlines are creating a business partnership that will enable their customers to travel between a variety of destinations in both the U.S. and Mexico. Presently, Southwest offers a link on their website to that of Volaris where tickets can be purchased. Mexicana flights to and from OAK codeshare with American Airlines and can be booked at aa.com.
