Airport Development Program
The ADP is an umbrella program for a number of on-going improvement and enhancement projects designed to accommodate increased passenger demand and to expand the airport’s reputation for convenience and on-time reliability.
The Terminal Improvement Program is comprised of the expansion and remodeling of Terminal 2 and improvements to the terminal roadway and curbside areas. Expected completion of these facility and roadway improvements is 2008. Upon completion of the Terminal Improvement Program, future plans call for additional gates and other associated customer service improvements that will be addressed in the airport’s Master Plan.
The ADP also includes an additional $120 million for improvements to the airport’s roadways. Improvements such as the widening of 98th Avenue with a new underpass into the airport and construction of the Doolittle Drive and Airport Drive interchange were completed in 2002. The project to widen Airport Drive, OAK’s main roadway, to a six-lane parkway connecting businesses and residents on Bay Farm Island in the city of Alameda to the airport and Interstate 880 was completed in 2004.
Originally designed for approximately eight million passengers annually, OAK served 14.4 million passengers in 2005, making it the second largest airport in the San Francisco Bay area. Additionally, OAK handled 673,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2005 and is among the top 30 airports in the world in the amount of air cargo handled. For historical traffic statistics, click here.
