Air carriers and corporate jets normally depart from the
main air carrier runway adjacent to the bay (South Field),
except during emergencies, runway maintenance and other unusual
circumstances. South Field air carrier departures between
the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. remain over water for as long
as possible before turning in the direction of their destination.
During favorable weather, North Field visual departures are
encouraged to fly over San Leandro Bay and the estuary to
avoid noise sensitive areas. The Airport continues to work
with pilots, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and
the community to determine the quietest procedure for nighttime
small plane operations from North Field. When possible, airlines
use quiet flying procedures that have been approved by the
airline industry and the FAA.
