OAK
is Major North American Gateway to Hawaii -
Over 1,000 Daily Seats to Four Islands in 2012
|

|
|
Based upon the huge
success of flights between Oakland and the Hawaiian Islands in
2011, both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are bringing more
paradise to Oakland International Airport (OAK) by adding seats in
the New Year. The two award-winning, customer-preferred airlines
recognize that for business or pleasure Bay Area travelers prefer
the reliability and convenience of an OAK departure.
Alaska Airlines will offer four daily nonstop flights to four
Hawaiian Islands in spring 2012, using new B737-800 aircraft.
Alaska is now OAK’s second largest carrier and it will launch
service to Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, beginning April 10.
This complements the airline’s existing daily service to Kahului,
Maui, and flights to Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island, as well as
Lihue, Kauai, which expand to daily service on March 12.
Hawaiian
Airlines also flies daily nonstop service to Honolulu from OAK
and will increase its seasonal nonstop service to Maui to
year-round in early 2012. The double-daily B767-300 wide-body,
twin-aisle aircraft offer a comfortable flight. The two flights,
combined with Alaska's four, bring the the total to six peak day
nonstops from OAK to the Hawaiian Islands.
“This
spring, there will be a record 1,000-plus peak day seats leaving to
the Hawaiian Islands from Oakland International,” said John
Albrecht, Manager of Aviation Marketing and Communications for the
Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK. “It is fitting that
OAK, the origin point for the first transoceanic flights from North
America to the Hawaiian Islands, emerges as a major gateway today.
There’s no better way to begin a Hawaiian vacation than from
Oakland, where travelers will enjoy easy airport access, excellent
customer service and on time flights,” he added.
The
number of airline seats to Hawaii has rebounded from the recession,
and is more than quadrupled from 264 daily seats offered in summer
2008. OAK is among a select group of US airports with flights to
the four major islands. Look for airline and on-airport parking

In August, OAK
proudly welcomed Spirit

flights. High load factors indicate Spirit’s new service has proven
popular with customers who have responded by taking advantage of the
airline's low fares and unique a la carte style pricing and service.
Spirit Airlines is
the first (and maybe the only) new airline to serve the Bay Area in
2011. Spirit has promised "to liberate the Bay Area from high
fares." See for yourself by visiting Spirit.com today.
The successful,
ultra low-cost carrier has had four consecutive years of
profitablility and, most recently, announced third quarter 2011
results showing an operating income of $46 million resulting in an
impressive 16% operating margin. Given this success, it is no wonder
that it chose to serve the Bay Area via OAK due to the airport’s
lower operating costs, central location and excellent reliability.

New OAK-Europe
Link for Summer 2012 Will Boost Bay Area Tourism
|

|
We're thrilled to
announce our newest airline and nonstop service to continental
Europe! ArkeFly will begin scheduled seasonal service between OAK and Amsterdam
Airport Schiphol on June 7, 2012. ArkeFly is part of the TUI
Travel PLC group, Europe’s largest travel conglomerate. ArkeFly’s
new twice-weekly service includes a nonstop flight and a direct,
one-stop flight (via LAX), and is part of the airline’s three
city US west coast expansion that includes Los Angeles and Las
Vegas.
|
“Beginning
in summer 2012, ArkeFly’s twice-weekly service will produce an
estimated $24 million in economic impact to Bay Area tourism
resulting from over 500 inbound international passengers each
week,” said Port Commission President Pamela Calloway.
ArkeFly selected OAK over a number of competing airports because
of its central location, lower operating costs, and high
aeronautical reliability. The airline’s target market is inbound
Bay Area tourists from Europe who stay on average nine-to-14
days.

The
airline will operate in OAK’s freshly enhanced international
arrivals area in Terminal 1 using B767-300ER aircraft which seat
283 passengers in three classes.

BART's Airport Rail Connection Well Underway -
Planned Opening 2014
|

|
Construction of the
Oakland Airport Connector along airport area roadways.
BART is making significant progress with train-to-plane service for
OAK. The Oakland Airport Connector is well under construction by
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). The progression of the elevated
tracks is highly visible along airport area roadways and in
OAK's parking lot where the Airport Station is being constructed.
The 3.1-mile environmentally
friendly, fun-to-use link between OAK and BART's Coliseum
station will add frequency and cut travel time to eight minutes
from the existing 15 minute headways for the current AirBART
shuttle service.
|
"The
Port of Oakland is an important funding partner on the Oakland
Airport Connector," said Deborah Ale Flint, Director of
Aviation for the Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK.
"The Connector will bring improved air service and economic
benefits to the airport and the East Bay Area," she continued.
OAK offers direct, convenient connections to more BART lines than
any other Bay Area Airport, and the current BART service from OAK
to downtown San Francisco is an impressive 30-40 minutes. Did you
know that roughly 10% of OAK's passengers use the current AirBART
shuttle, making it one of the nation's most popular airport-to-rail
connections?
|
Little
to no disruption is anticipated to current operations during
construction. Learn more at bart.gov/oac.
